The Worst Social Media Trends Ever
Social media has become the most popular way to connect with the people in our lives, and the world in general. We share our ups and downs with our followers, but sometimes people tend to share a little too much. Rants about hating work and your annoyances with your boss are much better gabbed about in private than spewed all over your Twitter account, and if you’re blatantly racist or sexist on the web, then you probably deserve the termination that’s coming for you.
The separation between our public and private spheres is becoming increasingly blurred, to the point where you pretty much have to assume that anything you choose to share on social media will be public. You may not always think it’s fair, but social media is accelerating as a means to get people fired in this day in age. Gary Stein was a Marine Sargent for nine whole years and was terminated due to one Facebook post. He couldn’t believe after all that time he could be fired for that, but when you bash your boss on social media, that’s what happens, guys.
And it’s not only about bad-talking your job or boss; you better keep your behavior in check, too. A high school teacher was canned after posting inappropriate photos to Twitter that showed her nearly naked and smoking pot. Another girl was fired from her job for dressing up as a victim of the Boston Marathon bombings and posting it to her Twitter account. Who knows what was going through their minds, but their mistakes cost them big time.
If these stories teach us anything, it’s to think twice about what you share online. And if you have to think twice, it probably means you shouldn’t post it at all. Check out 10 insane social media posts that got their posters fired.
